This could be the best French Open for team GBR since Sue Barker won in 1976! Here's hoping!

Only one representative in the Mens, sadly ; but he's the 3rd seed ; Andy Murray, after a very encouraging clay court season on what is not his favourite surface, is scheduled to meet Rafa Nadal in the SFs if the seedings work out. First up for Andy is Chela of Argentina, a former world #15 but currently #205.

3 Brit Girls in the Main Draw

Anne Keothavong, up to world #48 again this week, is in easily as of right and hopeful of following her best ever run on clay (not her favourite surface...a bit of a theme for most Brits! ) at the Warsaw Open last week where she made the SFs ; sadly she's drawn top seed Safina in R1. ; still, as the saying goes, she can go out swinging as there's nothing to lose (only the match, I always think subliminally ) Go, Annie

Mel South is also in as of right, albeit it was a close call; but hey who cares? She has an intriguing R1 against a young Portuguese player who takes the decibel count on the gruntometer to a new and sustained level ; but Mel does outrank her so it's a chance. Go, Mel (with ear defenders!)

Katie O'Brien and Elena Baltacha both picked up some nice ranking points by winning 2 rounds of qualifying before going down in Q3 but the turned to for Katie when she received a Lucky Loser slot thanks to a late injury withdrawal. Her R1 could've been worse, frankly, with her Belarussan opponent ranked 78 and on something of a poor trot at the moment. If she pulls this one off Katie will be top 100 in the next list. Go, Katie

Well, that was impressive!

Andy blew Chela away in 103 minutes 6-2 6-2 6-1

Annie K next up, first thing tomorrow against Safina on the main show court

Mel and Katie second and third up respectively on court 14

Good luck you three!

Not a good day for the Brit Girls

Annie kept Safina on court for over an hour (just) and had many excellent rallies and some winners; and quite a few game points; but no games. Safina is on a roll at the moment and clearly on a mission to justify her world number 1 status.

Mel had a dream start against her young opponent (touted as a future world #1) taking the first set 6-0; the next two were real dog-fights but Mel was closed out 7-6 7-5

Katie's Lucky Loser slot wasn't so lucky, Katie going down 1&1 to bring a disappointing day to an end.

Just Andy left, then, to battle away on the clay. Over to the green stuff for everyone else...

Another career best for Andy!

Through to the 4th round of the French Open for the first time thanks to a win in 4 sets in round 2 and a win in 2 sets in round 3 when his opponent retired when 6-7 3-6 down.

Next up is 13th seed Cilic of Croatia who had a very nice win in straight sets over 18th seed Stepanek in R3. It'll be a good workout then!

Big boost in Brit interest today

Andy takes on Cilic in the 4th round of the main event whilst the juniors get under way with 4 Brit Girls taking part including top seed Laura Robson

Hannah James, Brit Girl #3, has drawn the shortest straw in R1: Timea Babos of Hungary who won the ITF senior $10k at Edinburgh earlier this month. If the seedings work out Laura is scheduled to meet Timea in the SF.

In the other half of the draw, Heather Watson is the 13th seed and scheduled to meet 2nd seed Ana Bogdan of Roumania in R3 and Steph Cornish, unseeded, taking on an unseeded French girl in R1.

Good luck you 4!

Sadly, no Brit Boys to cheer for this year

Impressive from Andy again today!

Cilic looked like being a real threat but Andy dealt with him very nicely 7-5 7-6 6-1 in a little over 2 hours.

Next up is 12th seed Gonzalez of Chile. Go, Andy!

Brit singles interest ended at RG today

Andy's best run at the French ended in 4 sets at the QF stage. Sue Barker's record (and Tim Henman's SF) unrivalled for now, then.

Laura's run ended at the R2 stage in 3 sets. Think she prefers grass anyway!

Heather Watson still involved in the girls' doubles, seeded 3rd with Timea Babos, and through R1 today

Still some Brit interest at RG 2009!

Heather Watson's run in the girls doubles partnering Timea Babos of Hungary continues after a nice win 3&4 in the QFs yesterday; they face an unseeded Russo-Italian pairing 4th up on Court 3 today. Keep up the good work Heather!

Good luck in the Final, Heather!

Heather and Timea squeaked through their semi 6-2 5-7 1-0(8) but, hey, a win's a win

Lift the title, girls!

So close and yet so far

The boot on the other foot for Heather and Timea in the final going down 10-8 in the champions tiebreaker after sharing the first 2 sets 6-3 3-6. It's been a great effort though Heather. Good luck at junior Wimby now!
