From the grass courts of Blighty our attention shifts to the hard courts of Kazakhstan with Naomi Cavaday 4th and our Emily 8th in the Main Draw list for week commencing 27th July

Emily decided to head straight to the hard courts of New Delhi, then, (for two tournaments there as top seed by the looks of it ) leaving Almaty in Naomi's capable hands

Nice start, Naomi!

The vagaries of the rankings computer mean Naomi is the 6th seed with a tricky QF in prospect against the 2nd seed and world #219 but she had a nice first round win 2&2 today to get her campaign on the road.

A very decent effort by Naomi but she went down 6-2 7-6(3) and has now moved on to the $50k in Astana KAZ where she faces last week's doubles partner in the first round and, quite likely, this week's doubles partner in the second

Bad luck again, Naomi

First round negotiated for the loss of only one game but second round against the 8th seed ended in an agonisingly close loss 5-7 6-4 5-7; so near and yet so far

Time to turn attention towards the qualies for the US Open?
