Putting a lot in....and giving something back!

My weekly letter to you:      2009: Issue 3
Dated:                                  19th January 2009
Dear Member,

Hi! The work continues....

Seven days on and week two of my training block is complete, each and every session "in the bank" so to speak. It's been a tough week but a good one!
Cranking up the intensity

Gazette Article 15-1-09On top of continuing the two or three physical sessions each day that I mentioned last week, the volume of time on court each day has been increasing this week. It's all designed to make me faster, stronger and able to play at a high intensity for longer. I've learnt over the last few years that you never know when this type of work will pay off. Often, it's not when you think it will, or when you think it should, but when you least expect it!

Earning the right to compete

The important thing is to keep working through the ups and downs and try not to question things too much along the way. I remember a certain trainer telling me that working hard doesn't give you the right to win, it simply gives you the right to compete. I now understand what this means!

Questions and answers at Sutton Junior AcademySutton Junior Academy

On Wednesday, I gave a talk to some of the parents and players of the junior academy at Sutton where I've been training since June. Sutton could not have made me more welcome and has provided me with a positive working environment that I look forward to every day, with a coach and trainer who I trust and who believe in me. The talk, and the question and answer session afterwards, was my chance to give something back. After a resume of my story so far, questions came thick and fast from players and parents alike ranging from education and travel to what I had for lunch! I really enjoyed that hour or so and, although I'm still learning myself, it brought it home to me how much I've already learnt and how much the crazy journey of professional tennis has already given me!
