Background

Emily has been on the circuit for several years, and her all-court skills are well suited to grass and doubles. Aged 19, she reached the second round of Wimbledon main draw in 2004, and reached world #262, her best singles ranking for the ensuing 5 years 11 months, in the following June. Her determination has ensured that that was not to be her highest peak, however! 

Having been out of action with an ankle injury during much of the first half of 2008, Emily battled back from singles world rank 825 to be within sight of her Career High at #286 on 12.10.09 when a wrist injury prevented her from defending the rankings points she earned in the run-up to Christmas 2008.

The second half of 2008 had seen Emily working long and hard with good singles runs in Dubai and Kolkata, including a 6-2 6-1 win over the world 208 and she even spent Christmas Day contesting the $50k Delhi doubles final!
 
In 2009 Emily chalked up her first two ITF singles titles and her 5th and 6th ITF doubles titles including her first $25k title. By April she had climbed to be GB #6 singles and subsequently Emily achieved a succession of new career high doubles rankings peaking at 241 on 09.11.09 to be GB #6.
 
Injury niggles meant Emily could show but glimpses of her best on the world tour in 2010: her 6-2 6-2 singles win over the world #221 in Jersey in week 12; her 7th ITF doubles title in Madrid; and her first ever $75k doubles semi in Shrewsbury.

Happily, 2011 started very well for Emily: in her first 4 outings she made 3 $25k QFs and, winning the third one 6-1 6-3 against the world #214, she re-entered the GB top 10. In week 17, in Japan, she reached her first ever $50k singles final to rise to world #271 and GB #7. In week 18 she finally achieved that new singles CH, plus a new doubles CH, and once again became GB #6 in both lists. Two more CHs followed in week 19, and Emily entered the world singles top 250 for the first time. A wild card into the Wimbledon Championships ensued with, in the singles R1, Emily taking the world #35 to a final set before, in an uncanny reminder of her R2 of 2004, going down 8-6. An appendix operation interrupted her season shortly afterwards but, after 9 weeks away, she returned to the matchcourt in Cairns, Australia in week 37 to start her climb back towards the world top 250. Week 43 saw Emily up to world #246 singles and GB #4 doubles and week 45 saw her at a new singles CH #240 perfectly timed for the WTA Year End!
